Fund-A-Need Program

A favorite tradition of the Charity Classic is the Fund-A-Need program, which raises funds for specific strategic needs of the Women and Children’s Center. Make a gift today and support this critical need. As neighboring hospitals close their labor and delivery departments, our region faces a significant gap in women’s healthcare, creating increased need for our services. Wentworth-Douglass has experienced a 59% growth in number of births in the last decade. With this growth comes a rise in complex cases that require specialized care and additional resources to ensure adequate care for both mother and baby. To meet this need, and with the support of our community, we opened a second operating room dedicated to the unique requirements of our Women & Children’s Center patients.

In 2022, patrons of the Charity Classic helped raise nearly $13,500 toward the purchase of a GE Healthcare Giraffe Carestation; a critical piece of equipment that provides a neurodevelopmentally supportive, family centered critical care environment that reduces stress for premature babies at the Women & Children’s Center. Wentworth-Douglass is now a Level IIB NICU – the first on the Seacoast – thanks in part to its partnership with MassGeneral Hospital for Children.

2021 Fund-A-Need – The Kernus Family

At the 2021 Charity Classic, attendees helped secure a Rapid Transfuser and Infant Warmer; both critical pieces of equipment to save the lives of mothers experiencing post-partum hemorrhaging and newborn babies in distress. Our goal was to raise $20,000, but thanks to the generosity of our golfers, we raised over $32,000! Watch the video below to learn more about these critical pieces of equipment.

The extra funds were used to purchase several ‘halo bassinets’ for the Women and Children’s Center. This mobile bassinet can be positioned over or alongside a hospital bed drastically decreasing the risk of infant falls or drops. It allows a mother to care for her infant safely and securely and is especially helpful after a cesarean delivery when movement is limited.
